Extreme Makeover: Engineering Edition

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Patricia Broadbent and adopted daughters, Hydeia, Shaina, and Trisha, all of which were born HIV positive, are the very deserving recipients. Struggling with all three daugthers illness and her own recent battle with lung cancer, Patricia has learned to be optimistic about life. In fact, her only regret was that she did not have a suitable home for her children.

Wright Engineers was honored to be invited by KB Home to provide structural, civil, and MEP engineering services for the extreme house.

Engineering a home to be built in less than one week proved to be quite a task. The change from a 1,350 square-foot single-story home to a two-story 3,500 square-foot residence took some detailed planning.

"One of the biggest challenges," said Principal, Daniel Bartlett, PE, "was replacing overhead power lines with underground lines, due to the new second story, and bringing a natural gas supply to an area where all other homes run solely on electrical energy."

To monitor the project and answer questions during the round-the-clock construction, our engineers volunteered for shifts at the site. In addition, several of Wright Engineers' staff volunteered time simply helping the crew with painting, staining, sanding, and assembling furniture.

The Extreme Makeover home features four large bedrooms for each member of the family, a loft with pottery equipment, a swimming pool and spa, and a spacious living room equipped with a grand piano signed by Elton John.

Wright Engineers is pleased to be part of such a heartwarming experience. Not only did we engineer a beautiful new home, we helped engineer a beautiful new life for the Broadbent family.
