FUTURE CITY

Future City is a nationwide program that gives 6th, 7th, and 8th graders an opportunity to do the things that engineers do – identify problems, brainstorm ideas, design solutions, test, retest and build,, and share their results. It all starts with a question: how can we make the world a better place? The students identify a problem in one of the world’s cities and come up with creative engineering solutions to solve the city’s problem. Marcor Platt of Wright’s Phoenix office recently joined other engineering professionals from all disciplines ask the kids questions about how they considered some of the engineering issues involved in designing a city. The engineers aren’t official judges, but they do submit their top picks for the cities to the official judges.

Some interesting things that came out of Marcor’s discussion with the students about their cities: One young enterprising future structural engineer said: “as structural engineers we design buildings, the buildings fall over, and then we learn from our mistakes.” Another group learned that it’s not a good idea to build an airport control tower next to a volcano. A third group learned that if you try to build a city 30 meters underwater, you are going to have pressure issues. Pictured above are Marcor’s two sons, who joined him for the day.

ROYAL CREST APARTMENT HOMES

Design is nearing completion for a new 300-unit class A+ apartment community to be located minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, UNLV, and the Las Vegas Convention Center. The building, a 5-story wood frame over podium parking garage, is based on Humphreys & Partners Architects’ proprietary E-Urban design and is owned by DG Development Corporation. Wright Engineers is the project’s structural engineer. Construction is expected to begin in the fall.
