When disaster strikes, first responders rush to the rescue. When rescuers must enter damaged or collapsed buildings, structural engineers can provide building safety assessment, shoring design, and other guidance that will help mitigate risks and keep them safer. Scott Jones, SE, VP and director of Wright’s California operations, has recently completed the State of California Safety Assessment Program training as a volunteer structural engineer. The Safety Assessment Program utilizes volunteers such as professional engineers, architects and certified building inspectors to assist local governments in safety evaluation of the built environment in the aftermath of a disaster. Wright Engineers’ founder and CEO Brent Wright, SE is a volunteer structural engineer member of the Nevada FEMA Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue Team. “We’ll hope for no disasters,” said Scott Jones, “but if they strike, Wright Engineers will be there to help.”

Legacy Traditional Schools is a tuition-free charter school network with 19 campuses across Arizona and Nevada. Error Checking and the Black Box, a 3-part technical article written by Wright Engineers’ VP Scott Jones, SE has been published in Structure Magazine. The article addresses the importance of engineering judgment and the dangers of relying solely on “black box” computer programs for analysis and design without also doing independent error checking to verify that the results make sense.

For the third year in a row, Wright Engineers was named Utah’s Best of State in the Structural Engineering category.
