Ft. Moore Pioneer Memorial Los Angeles, CA
Ft. Moore Pioneer Memorial Los Angeles, CA
“It’s the most historically and geographically important monument that nobody knows about,” said Clare Haggarty, manager of L.A. County’s art collections. “It’s where Los Angeles really began, and it’s huge, and so many people don’t know it exists.” But after four decades of neglect, work to restore the 58 year old Ft. Moore Pioneer Memorial has begun. The memorial honors the Mormon Battalion, the U.S. 1st Dragoons, and the New York Volunteers who raised the American flag over the fort on July 4, 1847. Completed in 1958, the 45 foot tall memorial is the largest bas-relief military monument in the United States. The monument’s 80 foot wide waterfall was shut down in 1977 due to drought and has not operated since. Wright Engineers provided the structural engineering consulting and design for the restoration.
